Bringing Virtual Worlds to Life: 64% in Singapore believe that 3D environments will play a significant role in how they will experience products and services in the future.
Milieu Insight and SketchUp joint study reflects strong vote of confidence in 3D design and visualisation tools
With virtual reality, consumers now have rich, immersive way to experience, share and collaborate
Singapore, 24 November 2023 – Consumer research and data analytics firm Milieu Insight in collaboration with SketchUp conducted a study in September 2023 to understand consumer sentiments in Singapore towards using 3D design and visualisation tools. The survey polled 1,000 respondents from Singapore - nationally represented by age and gender, sought to understand the impact of 3D visualization on daily work/life.
64% of respondents in Singapore believe that 3D designs and visualisation tools will play a significant role in consumer product and service experiences in the future. The study also revealed that amongst respondents that have used 3D visualization tools, 30% use such tools to create 3D designs/models (eg for 3D printing), 28% for interactive presentations or reports for work or school, 26% for engineering and manufacturing.
When asked why they use 3D environments, the popular reasons were: to visualise how a room/ space/building will look (39%), or DIY projects (to design a room, furniture or event space) (37%), and to visual concepts /ideas for better understanding (34%).
The impact of 3D visualization tools on daily life / work
6 in 10 in Singapore who use 3D design and visualisation tools have seen improvements in their daily lives and work. 3D visualisation allowed them to have a better understanding of spaces (38%), allowed for more realistic/intuitive representation of layouts and environments, enabled them to plan and design spaces effectively (37%), enhanced task experience and improves ability to communicate ideas and concepts to others.
3D SketchUp models can now be viewed in virtual reality (VR) using a Meta Quest VR headset, offering users a powerful, immersive way to view or present designs. With SketchUp Viewer for Quest, even non-technical users can experience designs in an immersive environment without the need for complex controls or powerful desktop machines.
Interior designers, architects, engineers, and construction (AEC) professionals use SketchUp to engage colleagues and clients in experiential design reviews for more informed decision-making and collaboration on the go, in the office, or on site.
In contrast to traditional architectural representations that may be difficult for clients to understand, VR enables architects and designers to explore ideas or showcase their designs and convey design intent by enabling collaborators or clients to have a virtual walkthrough and experience the design in a true-to-scale virtual world. Using virtual reality, users can improve communication and collaboration with colleagues and clients. It makes it possible to iterate faster on designs, spot and avoid costly errors and explore ideas in real time.
In addition to native SketchUp tools, SketchUp Viewer for Quest includes features, such as tabletop and presentation modes, that offer architects and designers multiple ways to present their designs. With tabletop mode, users can walk around the SketchUp model and view the design as a virtual scale model. Presentation mode can be used to curate a client's virtual walkthrough, complete with a simple user interface and easy-to-use controls.
"We're already seeing the value of virtual reality across different industries such as retail, events, architecture and design, whether it's exploring ideas, solving problems or hosting multiuser What you See if What you Get (WYSIWYG ) viewing sessions. With virtual reality (VR), anyone can virtually inhabit a design, helping to facilitate clear and efficient communication while viewing virtual scale models, supplementing or alleviating the need to build physical models of projects." said Sean Baptist, SketchUp, Head of APAC, Trimble. "At SketchUp, we are excited that users can now utilise Meta Quest VR headsets to enter virtual worlds and view environments or products designed using SketchUp. Formerly available as a classic license, SketchUp is now available only available through a yearly subscription to enable users access to all our latest features and improvements.”
In healthcare, 3D visuals help to map complex patient anatomy to identify and diagnose certain medical conditions or plan intricate surgeries. The automotive industry leverages 3D visualisation in the design and engineering of vehicle prototypes to enhance safety and performance. The technology is also used to create immersive virtual experiences, from interactive gaming to virtual tourism, offering users the chance to explore new worlds from the comfort of their homes.
Availability
SketchUp Viewer for Quest is a free application, available to all users. To learn more, visit https://www.sketchup.com/products/sketchup-viewer. SketchUp also offers a free-to-use 3D Warehouse, where there are about 5 million searchable, pre-made 3D models that works seamlessly with SketchUp. 3D Warehouse is a tremendous resource for anyone who creates or uses 3D models. Millions of users can generate lifelike imagery, showcase products from multiple angles that can be viewed with VR, or even simulate real-world environments. The platform also hosts a collaborative community approach where designers, architects and creators can access, modify and build upon each other’s work, in 3D design and modelling.
In a world where technology continues to break barriers and redefine possibilities, exploring the realm of 3D visualisation has never been more exciting. From crafting suitable stylish living spaces to exploring new horizons through virtual tourism, the applications are endless. It’s time to embrace the power of 3D tools and transform the way we experience the real world.
E-commerce giant Shopify has found that using 3D visualisation improves conversions by 94% on average, with returns decreasing by 40%. Product visualisation using tools like SketchUp has also shown to be 6x less costly than traditional product photography.
Trimble acquired SketchUp from Google in 2012. SketchUp’s intuitive and user-friendly interface empowers individuals and businesses to create 3D models designs with ease.
